The answer is a lot simpler than most people would like to make this into.
The real answer is this:
Live up to the truths that you have been given to the best of your ability and you will make it into heaven.
A man or woman cannot be saved or condemned in ignorance. You have to know that you are doing something wrong in order for it to be a sin. However, it is also wrong to purposefully avoid learning what is right and wrong.
Some Christians believe that if you do not do certain things, e.g. baptism, you can not make it into heaven. This is only true if you have the knowledge of the truthfulness of that particular ordinance. God will not turn you away just because you simply did not know something. That would be as silly as punishing your child for jumping on the bed, without first informing him/her that it was prohibited.
The real measure of a persons character is seen in how well they live up to the truths that they have been given. People are at all levels of spiritual development - getting into heaven is a personal journey, and is based on your personal relationship with God. However, he does call certain people to help guide us on the path - and they are available if we are seeking Him.
