I do think honesty is the best policy. I'm a Christian, raised by Christian parents who saw some of their relatives always lying about something, then getting into deeper troubles because of it. I remember as a child that if I tried to lie, there is something about my body language or facial expressions that showed that I was lying and my parents knew it, so eventually, I figured out that I should be honest no matter what. Is it difficult? Sure it is, but, I feel better being true to myself.
Since I am honest, I have people who ask my opinion on something and they know they'll get a straight up answer, even if it's not something they want to hear. I've had to learn to be diplomatic, which doesn't exactly come naturally to me, so I usually keep my opinion to myself if I don't want to hurt a persons' feelings when my opinion isn't necessary and I don't really want to lie about my thoughts.
Anyway, in general I think honesty is the best policy. You'll feel better about yourself instead of compounding one lie on top of another, you won't have to remember the lie because you said the truth and won't end up trying to dig yourself out of a hole if you don't remember what you lied about. If you don't know how to answer one of those questions that is a no-win situation, then just tell them you don't know, and ask them what do they think about it. So, always be honest and you'll be appreciated for it by people who value your opinion.
