When our mutt, Bratzilla, came home at 5 weeks old she was a shy frightened, little thing that just wanted to be held. Now at 7 months old she definitely talks. She barks and whines like your normal dog, but there are times (i.e. when she wants to play, when you have been away for awhile, when she needs to go out) that she makes noises that could be construed as words. Sometimes you can make out words. She says "I want" "I am" (reply to "Who's my best girl?") "Out" "Hi" and what I think is definitely "Now".
We didn't teach her this and our other dog, 7 year old Bandit, does not talk. Now that we know we she has the, ability we are actively trying to teach her words. She started making these noises at about 4 months and it has only increased.
Dogs have tongues and reasoning skills (if I do y, x will happen), why wouldn't they be able to talk? You can go to You Tube and find a dozen different videos of talking dogs and they can be heard quite clearly saying things like "I love my Mama"
All dogs communicate in their own ways, barking, whining, tugging on your shirt sleeve, etc. Some dogs have the ability to take it one step further and talk. I have never met a dog I didn't love and have owned them all my life but Bratzilla is the only one I have ever had that talks and it amazes me. I always though that owners trained them to talk. Now I am of the opinion that some are just born with the ability to talk and owners just nurture it.
Maybe I am just being hopeful but I like to think she is talking to us, trying to tell us what she wants. Now if she could only say "Sorry".
