Did Julius Caesar Deserve To Die?
I am writing this essay on Julius Caesar because I believe he was one of the noblest men in the roman era. He was popular to many and was loved, he earnt his power over time and made many friends and enemies along the way. I thought this would be worth investigating, which brings me to my question Did Julius Caesar deserve to die?'
Gayus Julius Caesar was born on the 13th July 101BC. He was ambitious for power and glory like most roman nobles, but he followed the standard military and political ways of the cursus until his first consulship in 59BC. He wasn't the most powerful man but with his aristocratic background and his important family tree he earnt his power with other nobles but also gained respect from everyday plebeians. In 84BC he married the daughter of Lucus Cornelia Cinna. This was not a good idea because Sulla (one of Gaiys Marius's ablest generals) did not agree with it because it meant he was marrying into has rivals family. Sulla demanded him to divorce her but he refused, he then ran away to the east where he served on the governors of Asia and Cilia's. He became friendly with the king of Bithynia and later won a civic crown for gallantry. When he heard the news that Sulla had died, he came back home and prosecuted a number of notable people and started to make a name for himself in the law courts. This evidence had led me to believe that Julius Caesar acted reckless and arrogant; even though Sulla was one of the most powerful men at the time he went against him and ignored his instructions. Some might call this risky and say he was very arrogant but I think at the end of the day he was witty and clever and these are all aspects of a great leader. This was just the start of Caesar's problems, even though Sulla was dead, many of his followers were annoyed of Ceaser's actions and it would remain stained to his name for the rest of his life.
In 63BC he was elected Pontifex Maximus (chief priest) this gave him power in religion as well as military power. Crassus money helped him defeat two more senior candidates. In 60BC his career lead him back to Spain. At the age of 41 the government granted him the post of praetor (a man acting in one of two official capacities). There are beliefs that the senate sent him there because it is a troubled place and he would most likely fail. There had been trouble between a few tribes in Spain but Ceaser overcame to trouble and carried on to excel in his new role. During his time
