Trumpets make great gifts, but you must be aware that there are some that are on the market that are not worth the effort to pick up. If you do not already play trumpet, it is still pretty easy to tell a quality instrument from one that lacks it. Note here that quality doesn't necessarily mean greater expense.
When first checking the trumpet, make sure that each of the slides move freely and can be removed. The slides are the curved pieces of metal, and they are designed to be removed for cleaning. The mouthpiece should also fit easily but snuggly in place. Check the spit guard at the bottom front to make sure that it moves freely and that the cork is in good shape. Also check each of the valves. These should move freely and should rebound when you release them. If they stick or don't quickly rebound, there may be problems with the trumpet.
Check the outside of the trumpet to make sure that there are no scratches, dents, or dings. If there are any, it indicates careless handling, which can signal other problems that may not be apparent.
The trumpet should come in a hard case, to protect it when it is being stored or transported. The case should be lined with felt or similar material so that scratches don't develop, and the clasps should fit tightly, but be easy to open.
A good trumpet should also come with a small bottle of valve oil. This is very light oil, used to keep the valves in good working order. If it doesn't come with valve oil, suspect the quality of the product, but in any event, be sure to pick up a bottle.
A trumpet is an instrument that can last for many years with the proper care, and it can bring joy to the player as well as the listener. This is an especially thoughtful gift for a trumpet player, particularly an aspiring one.
