Christmas 2007: Hottest health gift ideas for the elderly

The elderly are truly the hidden gems in society, they deserve the utmost respect as they have endured in this cold world longer than many of us. They are the ones that have paved the way for us, for some that could mean literally, so what could be better after years of hard work than the gift of better health, increased strength and less pain? The following gifts are just about as good as it gets in the world of gift giving for an elderly person. So you can forget about another box of chocolates and a card this year, because good health and a new outlook on life is so much sweeter, without all that sugar.

Elderly people need to be conscious of their health, especially because good health and physical activity can allow them to feel much younger than they are, and get more out of life. The gift of a membership to a local fitness center with a pool is a terrific gift that can truly improve the physical wellbeing of your elderly friend or relative in the New Year. Due to the fact that elderly people may not be able to participate in higher impact exercises, swimming and aqua fitness are terrific alternatives to traditional aerobics classes, and are a perfect way for them to stay active, without causing pain or stress to the joints. Keep in mind though, that the center should be located as close to your recipient's home to ensure that it is convenient for them to use.

As people age, their bones become weaker and it makes tasks seem more difficult, even painful, and can affect a person's ability to be active. Ankle or wrist weights, or resistance bands, are the solution to this problem and make a great gift. These tools allow your elderly friend or relative to increase the strength of their bones gradually and eventually allow them to perform tasks easier and with less strain.

Walking is another terrific activity that most elderly people should be participating in if they are physically able. A pedometer makes a very useful gift for the avid walker on your list, or just to kick start their new walking goals. A pedometer allows them to view the distance that they have walked, and the calories that they have burned. This tool can assist them in making short and long term goals to increase their physical health. Walking with wrist weights is also a great idea to get a cardio and strength training routine all-in-one.

The cherry on top of it all would be a massager of some sort, one that is not too bulky or difficult to use, and can give them a relaxing finish to a long day. This is a great way to loosen up the muscles and relieve any tension, strain or pain. A great benefit of a massager is that the relaxing properties can allow for a better nights sleep, which is sometimes the most valuable gift that you could give to an elderly person.

As an added touch, you could include in their gift, a small handbook of stretching techniques to increase flexibility, and help to alleviate some of their pain. Even a health and wellness magazine would make a useful and thoughtful addition to any gift.

To give an elderly person a new shot at better health, increased strength and flexibility, and less pain, is a gift that truly shows them how valuable they are to you, and just how much you care about their physical wellbeing. If anyone deserves to put the time back into their health it is the elderly, and to give them a new lease on life..now what could be better than that?
