Happy people are always more productive. Do you know how I know this? I am one of them. And happy people even smile at the same time as they are productive. Thats a bonus!
After being a floor supervisor for many years, and having to deal with all types of people, who have all types of problems, and all who have different and even interesting lifestyles, can be difficult at best to make all of those people happy. The first little secret to making the majority of people happy is to show them respect. This bodes true for everyday life as well. When showing an adult that you understand their problems, their needs, and talk to them with care, compassion, and understanding the results are undeniable.
The majority of people will care, and give compassion as they meet the level of expectation within their job descriptions. They feel that their supervisor is genuine and truly cares for them and the work that they do. The moral on the floor is exceptional. This atmosphere in which the work is performed is loose and less stressful and becomes one that the employee is proud to be part of.
In fact, the happy employee will encourage those who are bringing down production with a bit of their own peer-type pressure. Further encouraging the team atmosphere. As well as putting pressure on those employees that are tardy at times, and have bad attitudes, the team will press that employee to be part of their team.
So basically, it's a breeze to supervise my happy employees. I used to have production meetings, if you will, with the general manager and other supervisors in the early beginning of the shifts at least once a week, or sooner if some problem arose. I would talk to one of the other supervisors that was in a different operation than myself, and all that guy ever did was complain about his people and how he can't get them to do work- those good for nothings! And on and on he'd go.
Same story different day. He'd say, how do you do it? How come they love you so much? Then I would tell him my little secret. I'd tell him how a little respect goes along way. And then he'd say, HUH?
That's when I'd just walk away. I can't wait to get back to my employees. I smile all the way back to the workroom floor.
