The gift of a better body and a healthier future is one of the most valuable things you could ever give to someone. A gym membership is a terrific gift for anyone on your list who will know and appreciate its true value. However, the tricky part of giving a gym membership is the difference between an I love it' reaction, and a so you think I'm fat?' reaction. A gym membership is definitely not a good idea for acquaintances, or anyone whom you have not seen in awhile, and most definitely not your boss, or the only thing losing weight could be your wallet in the New Year.
On the other hand, a membership to a gym is great for your partner, or a close relative or friend. This gift could be inappropriate if the person you are buying for has not expressed concern about their weight or current fitness level. However, it makes a most thoughtful gift if they have personally conveyed to you that they were considering on joining a gym, or hoping on becoming more active in the New Year.
An even better alternative to buying a year long membership, is to purchase a trial membership to a local gym that is close to the recipient of your gift. That way your gift will be convenient for them to use, and will not be a useless if they decide after a months time that a gym is not for them. You can even purchase a few personal training sessions instead, so that they can be educated on what they need to do to meet their fitness goals and get a head start. This will allow them to decide if they want to join a gym in the future, and who will they have to thank for their newfound inspiration and slimmer waistline? Surely you get the idea.
Another great idea is to purchase a membership for yourself as well, that way the problem of your recipient taking offense to the gift will be solved. You can enclose a message with the membership saying something like, Dear Kelly, I know we both said that we were going to battle our baby weight in the New Year, so I got you this so we can tackle it together.' This is a great way to present such a gift without fear of losing a friendship.
As long as the gift is presented to the right person at the right time, there should be nothing offensive about it. This gift is much more valuable than a pair pajamas and a box of chocolates, because the value of good health in the New Year is truly priceless, and your gift should be appreciated for being just that.
