The concept behind watching a movie in a theatre runs back to the dawn of storytelling, to the beginning of man on earth. If you think about it, going to a theatre is no different than sitting in front of a campfire in the middle of the wilderness and being told a story. This is the way we have been told stories since the first story was told, since Homer, since folklore, since the first time you went camping and were told a story. And that is why I love going to movie theaters.
Going to a theatre is a communal experience for me; especially on opening night. You get that rush of being the first person to see this new film, this new story. And there is no way you can beat the excitement and build up that grows when you are sitting in the same room as a couple hundred people all awaiting the same film.
There is also an added bonus for when the film is actually playing. The comedy is better because a whole crowd is laughing, the drama is more intense because a whole crowd of people are being shocked all at once. And the plot twists are more in your face when everyone in the theatre is caught off guard at the same time, for the first time.
The experience you can get in a theatre is so much more exciting than at home. At home it is most likely going to be either only you watching the movie or maybe a couple of friends or family members. The sound quality and visual quality is most likely also going to be better at the theatre than at home on a DVD. The only good thing about watching a movie from home his that you can pause the movie and you are in the comfort of your own home. But in my opinion, the extra intense and communal experience you can have at the theatre is a much better way to watch a movie than from the confines of your living room and your DVD player.
