As a paranormal investigator, I am all too often asked "How can I tell if my house is haunted?" As there are several different types of haunting, and add to that the fact that no two hauntings are the same, the answer never comes as easily as it's hoped for. One person may smell a cologne or perfume that he knows does not belong to any member in the family. Another person may experience doors opening and closing on their own. And still another may actually SEE an apparition. Below you will find a list of some of the signs in determining whether or not you live in a haunted house.
Lights turning on and off by themselves - This can also happen with radios, TV's or any electrical appliance and is seldom seen as it happens.
Unexplained noises - Rapping, scratching sounds and footsteps are all common to a home that is experiencing a haunting. The sound of things being thrown or broken can be quite common as well.
Items that disappear and reappear - Another common sign. You know you placed your keys on the hall table but suddenly they are nowhere to be found. After a frantic search of the house, they turn up on the hall table once again.
Doors that open and close on their own - This can also include cabinet drawers and dresser drawers. Sometime it is seen as it happens, but more often than not it is simply heard.
Feelings that you are being watched - Have you ever been alone in your living room and suddenly had a strong feeling that someone was watching you? This can be another sign of a haunting.
Animals behaving weirdly - Our pets are most sensitive to a ghostly presence, so if Fido starts barking uncontrollably at nothing, you may want to pay closer attention.
Cold spots - As you are walking up the stairs, you are suddenly enveloped in coldness. These are quite common but make certain before you run screaming from your home, that you haven't actually simply encountered a natural draft!
These are the most common beginning tell tale signs of a haunting. As with all things though, one must make certain to rule out every possible explanation first. Having one or more of these signs does NOT automatically make your home the playground of ghosts. Should you come up empty handed on natural explanations, feel free to contact an expert in your area. Every state seems to have a vast listing of paranormal investigators who will come, and without charge, help to determine what exactly is happening in your home.
