Walking and creativity: A winning combination

How many times have you read that walking is one of the best all-round exercises? And how many times have you told yourself that you should do more of it - but avoided doing so for one main reason - it's so boring! Well, there is a way to get out and move those legs without it being such a drag, and the way to do that is by adding a dash of creativity. By combining the simple exercise of walking with an engagement of your mind, you can reap a double dose of benefits, and help enhance every aspect of your life.
We have all heard about the health enhancements that come with regular exercise - increased energy, stronger muscles and reduced stress. We know that daily exercise of the body may reduce our risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke. And it might keep us younger, for longer. But knowing this doesn't make us want to do it! This is where you need to bring other aspects into your walking regime - curiosity, intelligence and - yes - creativity!
So next time you tempt yourself out the door with a pocket full of change for the milk bar as your motivation, stop! You're going to play a special game, tailored to your interests. If you like cars, set little car-based games for yourself. Walk for as long as it takes to spot three red cars, or four commodores, or a man in glasses driving a Volvo. If your interest is gardening, walk until you've spotted sixteen camellias and a flowering cactus. If you like dogs, keep an eye out for which dog lives where - you could even stop for a pat and a chat with the owner, and who knows where that might lead! If you hate going the same way every time, make it exciting! Go down a road you've never followed, discover a playground and take a picnic. Walk to your favorite store, and give yourself a reward from the store after you've walked the distance you need to maintain those physical benefits. So, as you can see, there's no need to put off walking any longer - just mix it in with a tasting of creativity, stir it up gently, and enjoy.
