TV show reviews: Babylon 5

or that the majority of the people living in this country dislikes and decides that their oppression, murder and persecution is justified. Power and information always gets into the wrong hands eventually, usually while no one is paying attention. Babylon 5 demonstrated this excellently with all of its story plots dealing with interstellar political intrigues and battles. J. Michael Straczynski and the other writers for Babylon 5 were more right about American society (and societies in general) than they probably new.

The fifth season is the weakest in my opinion but it's still very interesting. While I don't agree with much of the philosophical ideas of the show (the creator of the show is and atheist and I'm a theist) he brings up some very important things that all of us should really ponder on: how precious is freedom and liberty to you? Why can't we put aside differences and get along? Why don't more people try to do right by their fellow man? When will we break the cycle of violence, war and oppression of each other so that we can move forward as a species?

Most people would rather not be bothered with these kinds of questions which is scary. Anyone paying attention to the world scene and is the least bit familiar with history should be worried about where we're headed because it's about to get a whole lot worse for the entire inhabited planet before it gets better. One thing I like about season five is that everything isn't resolved. Peace and security hasn't been wrapped up in a big red bow and given to all of the races just because they overthrew their gods. There's still a lot of work to do and servants of the darkness (servants of the shadows) are still lurking about, beginning to rise in the power vaccum created and cause more chaos.

Having pontificated on the ideas and the questions that the show poses, it was fun to watch. My favorite characters were ambassador G'Kar and ambassador Molari and their story arcs. My favorite races were the Minbari, the technomages, the Narns and the Soul Hunters. Overall, Babylon 5 was one of the best TV series to come out of the 1990's.
