TV show reviews: Babylon 5

After putting it off for a number of years, I finally sat down and invested some time each week to watch the entire five year Babylon 5 series. Babylon 5 was created in 1992 and I believe it ran until 1996. What amazes me are the similarities in the politics and issues surrounding the show and what we are experiencing under the US government today. It's almost prophetic. You have a cabal of corrupt, twisted government officials who have plans of their own that they don't want to inform the public about and they lie, cheat and murder in order to grab power. After they seized power they create Orwellian programs that purport to insure the safety and "security" of the people of the Earth Alliance.

Organizations with benign sounding names like the Ministry of Peace and Night Watch - organizations with sinister purposes. Like creating government snitches. Then you have people in the political arm of government trying to take over and control the military. It's a government that pries into people's business and all matter of a person's personal affairs to report back to these entities. This world in Babylon 5 is also completely dependent upon on a massive, computerized system that has information on everything about everyone living or passing through the Babylon 5 station to Earth and vice versa. Everyone must carry a special ID card in order to live within this society. If anyone has beliefs, thinking, behaviors actions or even associates with those the government deems a "security risk" they face persecution. One reason why I hate the idea of implementing a national ID card system.

Not much different from where the US government is headed. Many people don't take the issues surrounding privacy very seriously. Companies can choose to hire or fire a person based on their credit history or their medical history today. So, will we have to be concerned later when they might decide to punish you based on your political affiliation? Religious or philosophical beliefs? That sort of thing can happen anywhere and I feel sorry for the poor souls who think that it can't happen here. Your personal information is bought and sold all of the time and right now it may not be a big deal. But if politics in this country change it becomes a very, very big deal. If you can be tracked no matter where you are just so that corporations will know what to sell you, think of the power this kind of information in the wrong hands can do to a population that the government decides is dangerous
