The Assault Of The Winter
One bitter cold day I walked outside my house desperately wishing the world would show signs of spring. After I went outside, I paced around our property. The air was violently cold. My body shivered with chill and repulsion. I looked around to witness what looked like death and destruction. My heart sank. The branches on the trees were bare. Their leaves, like flesh that had been torn off from them were gone, leaving only their skeletons. Our brown frozen lawn had been stripped of it's warm bundle of grass. The sky was robbed of blueness and brightness. Grey clouds entrapped me as far as I could see. The Winter had taken over. It had won the battle. The vegetation had put up a valiant fight but the doom was inevitable. The icy wind blew and stung my face like a wound. I turned away and smelled smoke from burning fire places nearby and I began to dream. I imagined I was smelling fresh flowers, newly cut grass and the musty earth after a warm rain fall. I imagined I could see trees and flowers blooming, bringing forth their beautiful foliage, sprouting and promising Spring. I imagined I could feel warm air blowing around me like a welcomed hug. Searching with my eyes closed, I dreamed I found the sun. I pretended it was beaming down on my face. I opened my eyes and realized
I was dreaming what could not be. The vast dull emptiness encapsulated me and erased the dream from my head. I turned around. It hurt to look at the horizon. Darkness was rolling in quickly. It was only five o'clock. Blackness came and covered the sky like a sheet laid over it's dead. It was the end of as dreary day and finalized defeat. I slowly turned my back to all the "ruin" and walked back into the house with a heavy heart, like a soldier who must pick up his battered weapons and go home.
