Christmas 2007: Gift ideas for grandma under $10

Although sometimes elderly people are challenging to shop for, finding a Christmas gift for grandma under $10 will not be difficult. Grandmothers love their grandchildren, and will appreciate any thoughtful Christmas gift you choose. Here are a few creative ideas that grandma will love:

1. A JOURNAL: Give mom what she needs to write down her thoughts during the day. You can pick up an inexpensive journal at Barnes and Noble or Borders books for under $10. Write an inscription inside to let grandma know how much you appreciate her.

2. PHOTO: Print out a favorite photograph and buy an inexpensive frame at your drugstore. Grandmothers love to show off pictures of their grandchildren. You could also buy an inexpensive photo magnet or photo keychain at your local arts and crafts store.

3. COOKIES: Baking cookies is almost as much fun as eating them, and you can easily make many gifts at one time. Make a few batches of different kinds, like chocolate chip, gingerbread, oatmeal raisin, and sugar cookies, and then make an assortment for each gift recipient and put in a box. However, don't give cookies to grandma if she is a diabetic or has other health problems.

4. A MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION. This will last all year long, and you have a lot of options. The gift doesn't need to be wrapped, or you can buy a copy of the magazine and wrap it up. If you prefer, you can send one online at www.magazines.com. They have subscriptions starting at $10.

5. PAPERBACK BOOK: Most retired people enjoy the solace that comes with reading a good book. Ask grandma what kind of books she likes to read and hit up your local bookstore. You should be able to purchase a new paperback book for under $9.

6. SMALL PLANT: Get grandma a small, easy to care for plant such as ivy or a Gerber daisy. Tie a bow around the pot to make it more festive!

7. RETURN ADDRESS LABELS: Make your own on Microsoft Word and the grandma can use them year around. The only expense to make return address labels is the cost of the blank labels and the ink for your printer. If you already have these around the house, you're all set.

The most important gift at Christmas is to let others know that we care about them and love them. Grandma will appreciate a small gift, as long as you give it sincerely. Do not feel the need to apologize for your gift being inexpensive. Even if you cannot afford to spend $3 on a card, write your grandma a handwritten letter expressing gratitude for what she has done for you through the years.
