Is it possible to use exterior paint for the interior?

Using exterior paint for an indoor application might seem like overkill at first, but actually this can be a great solution for some specific problems. Outdoor paint is engineered to be durable and resist water damage. For most rooms, this is unnecessary. However, it works great in the bathroom, and for several really good reasons.

The bathroom is often the smallest room in the house. The doors are often closed when the worst indoor climate offenses are taking place: while people are taking long, hot showers, spraying hair care products, or even smoking. This creates an intense atmosphere of heat, humidity, and airborne pollutants. The natural place for this mess to condense is on the walls, and close inspection often reveals discolored rivulet patterns where condensation has run down the walls before drying, leaving visible tracks behind.

Exterior paint is intended for challenging conditions, so it stands up to the heat, humidity, and most pollutants found in the bath area. In addition, the paint's surface is tough enough to take a good scrubbing or wash down with a spray grease cutting cleaner; interior paint wilts under rigorous cleaning, but exterior paint spruces up nicely. Good maintenance can keep the walls looking fresh for years.

Before painting, walls should always be properly prepared; clean and patch as necessary. A good coat of primer is always a good idea. One to two coats of exterior paint should be all that's needed to create beautiful, durable walls that are easily maintained.
