Although banned is a little harsh I think in certain restaurants cell phones should not be allowed. As a restaurant owner of a fast-service restaurant we were forced to post a sign reminding patrons that "their cell phone will get better reception outside". Why did we post the sign? Picture the scenario-busy lunch rush, line to the door, customer at the register gets ready to order and then gets on their cell phone, line is backed up, customers are angry and the cell phone person just keeps mindlessly chatting and ordering their food. Was this an isolated incident? No. It happened so much that we chose a humorous sign to get our point across. The customers reaction very positive. The ones that don't like it are the ones that seem to think having a cell phone permanently attached to their ear is o.k. They don't quite get that they are being rude.

In fine dining restaurants I do think cell phones should be banned. Eating out is as much about the experience as the food. When I go out and spend money to experience a new restaurant or a favorite familiar one I don't want my dinner interrupted by constant ringing and talking on the phone. I don't want to hear other peoples conversations.
