The Four Noble Truths:
Life is suffering! Number one of the 4 Noble Truths. It is so obvious and true. When I first read of the Buddha's teaching on the Noble Truths, I was amazed I had been in the dark for so long. When we are attached to anything, even clinging to life or a longing for death, causes us to suffer. Whenever we have an attachment, to our spouse, our children, and our country; it will lead to suffering.
The second Noble Truth is that suffering is caused by attachment and I personally think of clinging as part of attachment. I found, through introspection, when I looked deeply into the source of my suffering (depression, resentment, pride, etc) I had created the effect of suffering myself, therefore i could undo' it.
The third Noble Truth is that suffering can end. We ourselves are the only source of ending the suffering. When ego is reduced, we are free from any attachment, we might even experience a realization of the Oneness of all humanity and that we are only a part of the whole. We realize all we are is just an atom in this universe. Nothing more nothing less.
The fourth Noble Truth is that suffering can end if we follow the Eightfold Path. It is within the framework of our thinking, and within our own creative mind, that non-attachment can be experienced.
Zen Meditation, with no goal, no incense, no altar-just being breathing in and out-sometime (is time real or a figment of my imagination?) there is a special moment' when all is and I experience peace. (Is that attachment?)
