Steroids are important medications for treating children and adults for various diseases as asthma,premature babies,kidney diseases and so on.For some diseases there are no other effective medication as steroids.But steroids has some potential side effects as:

1.Steroids given to keep premature babies in the incubator can impair their growth, intelligence and development of motor abilities. Dexamethasone is the steroid given to premature babies with breathing problems.It is effective but not safe.This medication also causes holes and tears in the intestine of newborn.It does more harm than good reports The New England Journal of Medicine.

2.Excessive use of inhaler steroids can cause death.

3.Steroids can cause weight gain.

4.Prolonged steroid use cause eye problems as cataract and glucoma (increase in pressure).The steroids are prescribed after operations as corneal transplant.

5.Prolonged use of steroids reduce bone density and increases the chance of osteoporosis.

6.Occasional steroid use is not much useful in asthma.For better cure prolonged steroid use is a must.

7.Anabolic steroids increase blood level and affects chemoreceptors and they release male hormone testosterone.This steroid is used by many athletes to increse the performance.They affect the reproductive system,cause oedema in kidneys and heart apart from problem of kidney stone due to calcium deposition.
