Making bath salts can be really easy and fun. Simply take Epsom salts, adding a little fragrance and throw it into the tub. However, the secret to making truly luscious and decadent aromatherapy bath salts that are lovely smelling and actually good for your skin, is just a little more involved.
For a lot of beginners and folk who do not know any better, Epsom salts are the be all and end all. However this is only scratching the surface of all the salts that one can use for the health of your skin.
Epsom salts can be a very important part of your ingredients as they do have the benefit of relaxing sore muscles, relieving the minor pain of scrapes and bruises and are even good for plants, but to make something special you need to look into other types of salts. Bath salts should not be a one salt wonder, mix up to four different types of salts and throw in some Cocoa absolute as the final decadent and glorious note and youll have something extraordinary.
Some salts that are fairly easy to find are:
Red Hawaiian Sea Salt, a beautiful pink or red color caused by iron oxide
Dead Sea salts which contain upwards of 21 different minerals
Bali Sea Salts
South Pacific Sea Salts
French Sea Salts
Celtic Salts
Each one of these salts has a different mineral content and adding a variety of salts makes for a special gift or product.
To make your bath salts, take an equal amount of each salt for example
1/3 cup Red Hawaiian sea salt
1/3 cup Celtic salts
1/3 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
Skin friendly carrier or base oil, such as extra light olive oil, jojoba oil, rosehip seed oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc
Mix the salts together in a good sized bowl. Add just enough of your carrier oil to make the mixture barely damp. You do not want it dripping wet or even soggy. Mix it all together. If the only colored salt you have is Hawaiian Sea Salt, all your salts will take on this color, making them light pink to almost red.
Once it is mixed together, add your essential oils. Lavender EO is a very popular choice. Add about 45 drops to start with, you can add more if it is not strong enough to your liking. My personal favorite aromatic is Cocoa absolute (Theobroma cacao, made from the cocoa bean), the deep rich chocolate fragrance is utterly divine, I will add a tablespoon to the salt mixture. Try not to limit yourself to just essential oils either, ground vanilla bean and ground coffee beans are also to die for.
Stir it all together and then add your baking soda. Stir in quickly. If your mixture is too wet, your baking soda will fizz and you want the fizz to wait until it is mixed into your bath water.
Then place in jars and label them. You now have utterly divine bath salts that are special for your friends, family or even customers if you are in business.
One note of caution, citrus oils, while smelling delicious, can be irritating to the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin. They are also photo toxic which means that if the skin is exposed to the sun after the bath, a painful rash or burn might appear on the skin. Try to avoid those and stick with all the other lovely essential oils that are available.
