Essentials for biking safety

biking outfit, but it should be comfortable, not binding. Loose, flowing clothes can catch in the chain or wheels and cause an accident. If riding at night wear light colored clothes which can be more easily seen. Some sports clothes have reflective colors that are highly visiable. Shoes should fit well and not flop on the feet. If they are laced, make sure the laces are well tied to avoid tangling in the chain or gears. If you insist on riding in shorts and tee shirts, you might want to add elbow and knee pads.

Other helpful suggestions include taking plenty of liquids along to stay hydrated. A good flashlight could come in handy if you are night riding. Pack a small first aid kit somewhere. Snacks are optional. A cell phone is recommended in case you run into trouble, but don't use it while riding! USA laws require bicycle riders to go in the same direction as traffic, which makes me nervous! I always feel like someone is sneaking up on me! Nevertheless, always obey traffic laws. For bicyclers, It helps to choose roads with wide lanes and they should definitely have good shoulders! Nothing like having to swerve quickly onto a soft shoulder when a car fails to notice you. Always use bicycle lanes if they are provided. Riding with others is safer than riding alone, but if you do go alone, always let someone know your plans and destination.

In these times of rising gas prices bikes can be a cheap means of transportation! Getting out into the fresh air and the exercise of pedaling is certainly healthy. They are also fun and a great way to spend time with the family. The Dutch are great bikeriders. I once saw a family of five on one bike! It was a two-seater. Both Mom and Dad had a small child belted to their back and a toddler was in the front basket. I wouldn't recommend that as safe, but they looked like they were enjoying it. By all means, biking is a great sport. Just make sure you do everything you can to keep it that way.
