Like any sport biking can be fun and healthy. Like any sport, biking can also be dangerous. Whether you are riding a bicycle or a motorcycle it pays to take some precautions. Bike riders are more vulnerable to injury simply by the nature of the activity. They move in traffic with much larger vehicles. They are more sensitive to changes in the ground or road such as loose gravel and undulations and they are more subject to the elements.
The first essential for safety is to make sure the equipment is safe. Before a pilot takes off in any kind of airplane, he always goes through a safety check list. It might be a good idea to make one for your bike. (Note:This is a good way to model safe riding for your children, also.) Give the bike a good visual going over. Check the tires. Are they in good shape? Not worn, low or flat? Do you have a date when the tube was last patched or replaced? (If your bike uses tubes.) Now look at the wheels. Are they properly aligned with straight, tight spokes? Is the chain free of rust, tight and in good repair? How about the seat? No springs working through the top? Is the seat properly adjusted for the best fit for you? Even more important, is it securely fastened? Are the handle bars secure and responsive? Test the brakes for proper adjustment. Check all the lights and reflectors to ensure they are in place and working. Keeping your bike in tip-top condition should be your number one priority.
Some optional gear is suggested to make your ride even safer. A rear-view mirror lets you know what is behind you. A bell or horn can warn pedestrians you are in the area. Extra reflectors on the wheels increase visibility at night.
The second essential for safety is to make sure the operator is also in good condition. A biker should never ride under the influence of any drugs or alcohol. Even prescription medicines can sometimes interfere safe operation of a vehicle. Check your medicines for such labels. As you ride, stay alert. Watch for other vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles on the path. Note the side areas, also. Children, animals and balls have a way of popping from the sides unexpectedly. Make sure nothing distracts you from the main objective-a safe ride.
Then, make sure you are properly outfitted for a ride. Some states have laws requiring helmets while riding. Even if your state does not, it is highly recommended. Head injuries are one of the top injuries in bike accidents. Wear the right clothing. It doesn't have to be an expensive
