Biking is not just fun; it is a great form of exercise. But remember that you are open to the elements. Safety is therefore of paramount importance. So as not to leave anything out, let's take it from top down.
· Not yet mounted, but we have to use some brainpower. Check the route. Ensure the bike is mechanically sound. Check your brakes. Check for the tool and spare kit. And off we go, but wait.
· Never leave the helmet. The statistics are clear. Helmets do decrease the risk of serious head injuries.
· Going down, again we're back to the head and still on the brain. Use common sense at all times. Don't try to beat the lights, change direction suddenly etc.
· Your eyes. Yes, still on the head. Be alert.
· Your ears. Another vital tool. Listen for breaking, horns, engines too close etc.
· Wear comfortable clothing, but not too loose. You don't want a pants leg getting caught in the spokes.
· You can also add extra pads e.g. for the knees and elbows in case of a spill.
· Make sure you have proper reflectors or lights for night riding.
· Although tempting, keep your hands where they ought to be; that's on the handle bar. I've seen it before. The resulting spill is not just painful, but down right embarrassing.
· Ride with the flow of traffic.
· Remember that the road code also applies to you.
· Take care in passing vehicles. Never overtake a bus on the passenger exit side. Careful when passing occupied cars, as passenger doors can be swung open unexpectedly.
· Select the appropriate gear to provide ease of pedalling but with some amount of traction.
By the way, we're still on the head. Biking safety, like any other safety issue in life has much to do with planning and awareness. Safe travel.
Yours for Fun
