Many people seem to think that there is no problem in riding a bicycle in just a skimpy t-shirt and shorts. Nor do they consider that the bicycle should have any safety equipment on it. How wrong can they be? A bicycle is just as dangerous as any other vehicle. In many ways, it is more so, because you are at the mercy of other road users.
If a car hits you, the velocity at which you will be travelling through the air is as fast as if you were thrown through its window. Therefore, it is essential that you wear protective clothing. This should consist of a strong helmet, similar in strength to those that professional riders wear, together with elbow and kneepads and leather gloves (even the ones with fingers free). In addition, a reflective armband of jacket is important.
For the bicycle itself, you should ensure, before you embark upon a trip, that the lights and the bell are working properly, as well as check the tyre pressure and the effectiveness of the brakes. The bike should also have a rear reflector and, if possible, a reflector arm that protrudes at right angles to the bike, which will give other road user an indication of the minimum amount of room they should leave you when overtaking.
Be safe today and enjoy tomorrow.
