Well, the close I come to biking nowadays would be my exercise biker at home.
But here are advises I would give to my kids based a driver's point of view:
1) Avoid motorways, there are some bunch of speed-maniac there, that would not give heed to two wheelers;
2) Even though this would be useless in case of major accidents, try to keep the basic safety accessories as top priority when going out on a bike.
- A cycling helmet
- Gloves
- Knee-pads
- Elbow-pads
- Wear shoes, not slippers ;
3) Avoid overtaking lorries or buses;
4) Always wear bright colored shirts or use a fluorescent vest on all occasions, as you never know if you can get caught in a downpour with poor visibility for drivers. This will also be crucial for afternoon and night cycling.
5) Make sure that you have reflectors and a flash light or integrated light on your bike;
6) If you use your bike for fitness purposes, avoid roads. Go for pedestrian and cycling zones, or simply head for the wild, at least you can be safe from road related accidents;
7) Always keep a bottle of water on you, cyclist tend to get dehydrated quickly;
8) My best advice is never go alone, take a friend with you, in case of problem you will have first hand support.
