You have finally made the decision to purchase that Cabbage Patch Doll your daughter has been begging your for. With so many options just where do you start in choosing the one that will be perfect for her?
Cabbage Patch Kids were originally crafted by Xavier Roberts in 1976. As these dolls were crafted by sculpting them with needle and thread, Xavier started calling his creations "Little People". Not one of these dolls were the same, each one had a different feature of some sort whether it was the hair color or shape of the nose making them very unique. Xavier began the tradition of a birth certificate of sorts to go along with his little people and letting consumers "adopt" a baby for a price of $30.
After receiving awards, Xavier joined with some friends and opened a hospital (store) in Georgia for his little people to be adopted from. Adorned in hospital attire, employees greeted guests at the door and brought them to choose their new baby to take home. By the 1980's media had found Xavier's little hospital and mass production was consumed! Everyone wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid.
Mattel now creates many versions of the Cabbage Patch kids, waiving away from the original form of cloth bodies and faces, to either having a cloth body and vinyl head or the newest version of an entire vinyl body. Children love these dolls but the prices can be a little high for parent's to purchase on a whim.
Before purchasing a Cabbage Patch kid for you child, you should first take into consideration your child's age. If she is young, she would probably prefer to mother a 'kid' that comes with bonuses such as a potty, food or a toothbrush. These dolls are generally smaller in size (14") and are easily wiped clean if crayon or any other substance happens to make way to their skin.
Older children, who may still want to play house, but also want a more mature natural looking baby you may want to look a little harder for a cloth bodied doll with a vinyl head. These 'kids' are a little more expensive but are definitely worth the price. Each of these dolls are unique in their own special way. You can get a boy or a girl, dressed in different clothing.
For the collectors in you family, you can do a lot of research and find the original hand crafted Xavier Roberts little people. These dolls can be recognized by the actual signature of Xavier Roberts which can be identified by the large X which is not present in stamped signatures. There are many false little people out there as people have tried to make imitations. If you want a genuine Xavier doll, take your time and examine the doll. Do not jump at the first one that comes your way. The original dolls should also have "bathing" instructions on a tag from their place of making " Baby land General Hospital".
If you are still unsure of what 'kid' to get for your little one, check out Cabbage Patch Kids official website at www.cabbagepatchkids.com, where you can make your purchase on line or if you live close enough...visit the store. Browse the hospital rooms where deliveries are made and adoptions are performed. Best of all, enjoy your baby!
