First person shooters have always been a mixed bag for handheld systems, ranging from the unplayable (Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball Max'd) to the superb (Metroid Prime Hunter). But Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare brings us a refreshing example of what can be done on Nintendo DS with FPS gaming.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare takes a step away from the original World War II battlefield, and instead you play as a special forces operative in the Middle East and Russia working to stop terrorists who intend to use a nuclear bomb. The environments you travel through are visually satisfying, providing realistic 3D backgrounds for the battlefield. The visual details of the game are complete, taking the hardware of the DS to the max.
The controls of the game aren't perfect, but it isn't anything that would get in the way of satisfactory game play. You move your character with the D pad, aim with the stylus, and fire by pressing one of the two shoulder buttons. The touch screen is utilized by providing quick icons for switching weapons, throwing grenades, and other specific opportunities that come up in the game. The controls sometimes fail to be registered by the game, and sometimes you have to send the commands twice, which is the main problem with the controls of the game.
Call of Duty 4 also lacks any form of online multiplayer game play, which really takes away from the game, especially with a rather short single player campaign (it took me about 10 hours to complete). The game does support a 4-player local network setup for the game, and there are some decent multiplayer maps for enjoyable death matches if you can round up three other players, but it doesn't make up for the lack of online play.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a very solid shooter for a handheld system. There might a few minor errors with the enemies respawns, but overlooking these, the visuals and overall effect of the game is stunning.
