The thought of acquiring, keeping and even breeding exotic animals can be very tempting. The rarity of a species, the fact that many are considered mysterious and the possible financial returns, often increase the temptation to get an exotic animal. However, there are several important issues to consider. For example, they will demand a lot of preparation and care once you have them. Most people will acknowledge this. But most will probably not have thought about the social issues that they will very likely also have to face.
Here are some examples.
1. First of all, make sure you pet is legal. Harboring an illegal pet is very likely to place a considerable strain on yourself as you try to conceal it, as well as with neighbors if they become aware of your pet, as they have a legal obligation to report the matter.
2. Entertaining. Not everyone will be as enthusiastic about your pet as you are. Some will prefer to stay away especially if they perceive the animal could be dangerous or in any way intrusive during a visit.
3. There are folks who believe that animals like these should be left in the wild. They may be quite vocal about it. Be prepared to stand your ground, educate them or defend yourself.
4. Some exotics e.g. a snake or lizard, may not be particularly pleasant to look at for some. Their presence may be upsetting.
5. Exotic animal are likely to demand as much if not more of your time than any other pet. This will require significant preparation and commitment. You need to ask yourself whether you will be able to reasonable fit them into your schedule and lifestyle.
6. Some exotics are very social and demand even more of your time. Many are also long livers, so be prepared to have them around indefinitely.
7. Consider whether your choice will be compatible with children, if you have your own, or if other children frequent your home. This is particularly important for small children.
8. Also consider whether they will fit in with other family pets. If not you will have to either reconsider or make preparations for a separate space for them.
9. As with any other pet, exotics will vary in terms of how active, how loud and how messy they are, among other traits. It is therefore important to take your own personality into consideration. If you decide to get one, try to find a compatible species for you and other members of the household.
