Different breeds of horses naturally have varying behavioural and other traits. Many are bred for particular functions that inherently incorporate distinct characteristics into the breed.
A potential horse buyer can utilize these differences. A very important consideration here is your level of proficiency in riding. Older horses are generally calmer and more self-assured than younger horses. They are generally easier to control and from experience are better at interpreting the needs of their mount. As a result this type of horse makes a better starting horse for those with undeveloped horsemanship.
The same principle applies to the different breeds of horses. Some are naturally more suited for the novice and others for the experienced horseman/woman. For example a very fast breed like an Arabian may be dangerous for a novice, and best left for the experienced rider.
If you are an experienced rider you will also want to choose a breed that matches the task required. Do you want a horse for trail riding, pleasure riding, show jumping or racing? Assuming that you have the necessary skills for these then there are certain breeds that are bred for and therefore more suitable for specific functions.
For example an Arabian is good for trail and endurance racing. Caution though for the beginner. A versatile breed is the American Quarter Horse whose calm disposition lends it favourably to a wide range of skill levels and functions. And finally the thoroughbred for racing will always demand an experienced rider.
