The more annoying co-worker: The tattletale or the gossip

I definitely vote the tattletale annoying without hesitation. There is nothing more

disconcerting than knowing that your every move is being scrutinized by someone that you can

only label as threatened and insecure. These people a lot of times, have been on their jobs

for a while and think they have a pretty good bead on things. They might even be under the

perception that the ship would sink if they weren't on it to keep it afloat. Then you have

the new girl/guy come on board and all hell breaks loose.

It's actually sad when you think about the tattletale and all they have to endure.

They have been on top of the game for so long pulling long hours, offering to assist someone

that is new and maybe fledgling a little, checking on everyone in the office to make sure

that documentation is being kept up with etc... It is really hard work helping the boss

manage such a demanding place of business and of course there is nobody better to keep on top

of things than the tattletale. They really are put upon.

I think that insecurity plays a very big part of this tattletale business. Why else

would someone spend so much time watching everyone? Maybe on some level, they know that there

performance is not one that is to be considered stellar, maybe they are burned out in their

own position, maybe they feel they should be in the management position and keeping track of

everyone else will cinch that for them. At any rate, the tattletale is someone to steer clear

of every chance you get.

The gossip is totally in a different category. They are attention seeking individuals

that have nothing exciting going on in their own lives. Usually, the gossip is someone who

does not appear to to be very popular and with good reason because all they do is gossip.

Maybe if they felt like they were a part of something they would not be so ready to play make-

believe. These folks are annoying but, they at least are not usually malicious. So who is the

most annoying? I think the only way to answer that one is to decide who is capable of doing

the most damage to us professionally, the one trying to climb the ladder of success by any

means necessary, or the one trying desperately to fit in? I would have to vote the tattletale

as the most annoying since this one is capable of putting jobs in jeopardy.
