The New Year always seems to evoke the desire to begin a healthier lifestyle. Many people make a resolution to get into better shape, run a marathon, lose weight, put on some muscle, or just become more active. If you know of someone who maybe has mentioned the idea and you would like to help them kick-start that resolution a gym membership can be a greatly appreciated gift.
The first thing is to shop around at various gyms. The decision should be based on several factors:
1. Location-is the gym close enough to work or home that it is easy to get to no matter what the situation is? Bad weather? Time of day? Day of the week? Many people will find it is easier to make use of a membership if it is conveniently located.
2. Atmosphere-what is the feel of the gym? I have worked in the fitness industry for several years and been a member of several gyms. Many people become more self-conscious at gyms because they feel as though you can only go if you look the part. A sad thing, but it can be an atmosphere that is intimidating and can drive people away. It is important for some to know that they can go to a gym and feel as though there is a more positive energy around them, more encouraging. I have seen complete strangers encourage each other and just be friendly. I have also seen places where the workout outfit and how you look is more important than actually doing any kind of exercise. It can more important that you think.
3. Equipment-does the person you are buying for want state-of-the-art equipment or would they be satisfied with more simple things? Many people don't ask for much when it comes to exercise. Most gyms offer classes and if the recipient is interested in attending more classes then they may not need a lot of equipment. Some people like more options and it can be helpful for anyone just starting out. Most weight machines are a safe way to make sure the person has correct form and they usually have pre-set weight so as not to overdo it right away-a great stepping stone. And machines will usually have a brief description as to how to use it and what muscles you are working.
4. Cost-probably one of the most important things. Most commercial gyms will require a signed contract. If your recipient would make the most of the membership this is not a horrible part, although it is better to find a gym that would allow month-to-month. Many times there are big hidden and up-front costs that can add up before you know it. A good thing to do is to thoroughly read the gym policies and membership guidelines and ask a lot of questions. It is your money and you want to make sure you get the most from it. If there is anything that makes you feel pressured or uncomfortable then it probably isn't the best place. Some would also negotiate pricing with you and most of the time they would rather you join than leave, and if you are able to negotiate then get everything in writing and keep a copy for yourself.
The gift can be a great motivation for both you and the recipient. What would make the membership even better is if you said that you would like to start having a partner to workout with, that you need the inspiration too.
