Ahhh, there's no finer sport than freshwater fishing. That is, unless you are not a freshwater fisherman (person) and are now reading this article in hopes of learning all about the best of best gift ideas for the fishing fanatic in your life. It does not have to be a traumatic experience to buy the perfect gift for the fisherman in your life
There are complete kits you can buy for under $10. There are rods and reels you can buy for hundreds of dollars for each piece.
There are accessories like a ten cent lure, to the ever popular "bass boat" for thousands of dollars. All you have to do is look for a gift that suits the level of interest or your fisherman.
For some fishermen it is strictly a hobby and even the most inexpensive fishing related gift will impress. What better fun than to try a new kind of lure or a different inexpensive reel just to see what happens. For them it's a low cost venture and they just want to enjoy a nice day and hopefully have enough fish for dinner.
Then there's the Fisherman. The F is always a capital, and to the Fisherman it's a serious battle of man vs. fish. It's not fun, it's a sport and like all sportsmen they take their sport very seriously. The gear has to be the right brand, the right color and the right size. Lures must be hand made by a Zen fishing master and fiberglass rods are pass. In spite of this they can still be surprisingly easy to buy for.
Buying for either type can be done no matter your budget. Hobby or not, the leisure fisherman would enjoy a top of the line rod and reel that will never break and can be passed on to sons or grandsons. The sportsman can always use new hooks. Gift certificates to their favourite tackle shop will always win you a grin and a hug.
If in doubt, go to plan B. Plan B is all about enabling. If you can't buy the actual gear, buy the things that will make him more comfortable as he brings in the big one.
Warm sweaters hats, shirts, pants, etc in earth tones will keep your fisherman warm while waiting for that bite. Just be aware that fish can actually see somewhat above the water. It's limited and not very focused, but bright colors are a fishing no-no.
A thermos for coffee (or bait, ewww) how about two thermoses?
Waterproof containers. Big or little there's always something a fisherman wants to keep dry.
Something for the car. Don't forget that almost all fishing ventures start with a long drive. How about some music to listen to or a back supporting seat cushion? Anything you can get to make the drive more enjoyable is a sure winner.
Maybe a gift certificate to the favourite little restaurant he likes to stop at on the way to the fishing hole? Or the coffee shop he goes to on the way home?
There's always something you can get to make your fisherman happy that doesn't have to break the bank or require you to read minds.
