Let's be honest. A government of the people, for the people, and by the people has perished! Our country is led by wealthy Americans who go to Washington to get wealthier. The days when the common man could run for elected office have long since passed. In today's world of campaign financing you have to be wealthy since you will either have to finance your campaign yourself or leverage assets to run for office. You will also need some large contributors to donate money or back your run for office.
Do some research on the net worth of your state's U.S. Senators and Representatives? You'll find them to be pretty well off financially. Then, ask yourself this question; why would someone worth millions already want to be a Senator or House Representative? To serve the public interest? Or, to line their pockets and the pockets of their friends? The people we're sending to Washington to represent us aren't like us, don't think like us, don't face the daily problems we face, don't understand what it's like to work, pay bills, and raise kids in today's world. Oh, and in case you don't know this, with the current private campaign funding system, when the election is over, any unused funds are theirs to keep.
Private funding of elections provides a format for only the wealthy to participate. It allows special interests to control candidates and elections and eventually the policies our Government implements. Wake up, get mad, become involved, contact your congressman and demand we change the system.
Instituting a program where all candidates receive the same amount of government financed campaign funds provides a fair playing field for all.
