Mushrooms have a host of benefits as they are fat free, cholesterol free, low in calories, high in fibre, provide us with a range of vitamins and minerals and have anti oxidant properties. Vitamins include B1, B2, B3, B7, B12, C and even a source of Vitamin D. Minerals include iron, selenium, potassium and phosphorus. The mushroom is a fungi and are extremely easy and versatile to add to many different meals. They are used in all cuisines from Asian right through to Mediterranean cooking.
Mushrooms can be eaten raw in salads, or cooked in a variety of meat dishes. Mushrooms are a good addition to chicken, fish or red meat and will compliment any meal. Mushrooms can be served as an appetizer, they can be marinated and piled on to toast for a quick bite or used as a side dish. Mushrooms can be added to soups and stir fry dishes or grilled on the Barbie. Mushrooms can be added to other vegetable dishes or used alone, skewered on kebabs or added to pasta or rice dishes.
Mushrooms are a treat to use and they enhance the flavor of many different dishes.
Of-course their are many types of mushrooms some are very flavorsome like the Porcini with its very earthy and distinct flavor, and others are light, with very soft muted flavors like the common button mushroom which is easily added to salads and light meals. Adding the right mushroom to the right dish will create a lovely feast for the senses. Care needs to be taken as not all mushrooms species are edible or even safe. Buy your mushrooms from a reputable grocer and have fun in using them in your kitchen.
The Mushroom has been around for many years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine mushrooms were used to promote good health and vitality. Mushrooms like the Shiitake and Maitake have been used for their immunity enhancing properties.
Mushrooms are certainly versatile, easy to use and are very good for you.
