Poetry: Walls within

Wall Around My Heart

The wall around my heart
Was built brick by brick
As you consistently,
Day by day, month by month,
And year by endless year,
Castigated me for the past-
A past that I could not change,
A past that I had no control over.
A past that you disapproved of,
Just as you disapproved of me.

That wall around my heart
Led me, finally, to break out,
Away from your constant censure,
Away from your insistent demands-
Demands for things you once told me
You would never ask of me.
I had no recourse but to leave,
Physically, before I unwittingly left
Emotionally, and never came back.
Either way, I would be gone.

Now, the wall around my heart,
Although still in place for you,
Has been breached by another-
One who loves me without question,
One who accepts my past without censure,
One who lets me be the person I am-
The person God meant for me to be-
A woman who loves life,
A woman true to herself and her man,
A woman who is whole and free!
