Buying cookware for your college student can be a great idea however with limitations. Due to fire code regulations, college dorms are extremely strict on the cookware items that can be used on their property. After checking with the college directly, check out this list for some must have items. Of course if your child has an apartment then you can splurge and just purchase them with no questions asked.
Microwaves: These are essential to most people in today's age especially college students as you can use them to cook almost anything quick.
George Foreman Grill: These are inexpensive indoor grills that can be used to cook anything from sandwiches to fish to even burgers and steaks. They also have grills with warmers on top to use to warm bread. They come apart for easy and quick cleanup.
Paninni Press: Paninis are the newest food trend among young adults today. That is what soared Panera Breads business to the top. Let your child make their own pannini sandwiches cheaper and faster.
Toaster Oven: You can make practically anything in a toaster oven these days. These appliances are almost as valuable as microwaves.
Electric Griddle: These are flat electric pans that allow you to make things such as pancakes, grilled sandwiches, bacon, eggs and other yummy treats. They are usually nonstick making for easy cleanup.
Food Processor: If your college aged student likes to experiment and cook, then why not spring for a food processor and let them dice and chop up their food with ease.
Coffee Pot: I know its not general cookware, but hey some students like myself, consider coffee a meal. Why not splurge for a fancy coffee pot, espresso and cappuccino maker all in one.
Hot Water Maker: Sunbeam makes a small and convenient appliance that allows you to heat up water to boiling quickly and easily. Your child can use this to warm up water for instant coffee, tea, oatmeal or other things where they would need boiling water.
Other things to remember: Oven mitts, spatula, dish towels, plastic silverware, paper plates, paper cups, napkins and paper towels. Try to get as much disposable dishes and silverware as possible as I am sure your child will not want to be bombarded with cooking and cleaning up.
If your child is in an on campus dormitory then do not forget to check with their residence adviser or with the residence life department of their school to get permission for any appliances.
