It seems that many, who consider morality, or the loss thereof, relate this subject directly too the idea of Christian standards of morality. Without doubt Christian standards of morality represent a vast majority of the citizens of the US, however not all of us. Certainly the King James Version of the Bible does not speak to all of us who claim Christianity even. I would say too those who are bemoaning the public loss of morality, check your premise; the basis of your argument is flawed.
What are the arguments really? That we were a previously moral society that is now less moral through some loss? I would argue that we must look at the history of our country and its development with some degree of honesty before we make this claim. The truth is the foundation and framework of this country is the decimation of the indigenous peoples through acts of violence and lies, the enslavement of tens of thousands of Africans, and the virtual enslavement of Chinese to build the railroads across the country. None of these acts could be called moral by any standard.
That violence is increasing? I would say that this is not the case. In truth violence has always been part of our society. In every age we have had violent people who perform violent acts. During the settlement of this country we had outlaws that ranged throughout unsettled lands. After the Civil War outlaw gangs such as Jesse James were considered heroes. During Prohibition the Mafia moved to the forefront and we made heroes of Capone and Bugs Moran. Of course during the Depression we also had the great Public Enemies such as the Barker Gang, John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde; all of whom captured the public interest.
When we talk about morality we can't forget about sex and marriage. Increased divorce rates, increases in birth rates outside of marriage, increased single family households, and of course the fact that homosexuality is finally and firmly out of the closet and demanding equality in all facets of public life. Socially we are not decrying the increased divorce rates as tearing the moral fabric of society this seems to be acceptable behavior by church and state. No, what seems to be the focus is whether homosexuals should be allowed the legal protections of marriage; literally whether they are fully franchised members of society.
Speaking of sex, we should not forget about the issue of education of our young people in schools. Yes, that moral conundrum that has the government failing too acknowledge
