Christmas 2007: Gift ideas for commuting college students

At the risk of sounding redundant, I would say that the obvious gift for a traveling student would definitely be some sort of gas card. With the price of gas soaring to near unreachable heights, we couldn't expect a penniless student to be able to fill up more that once a week. But, there are several gifts that would also come in handy for our young travelers, among them various gift cards for different fast food restaurants. Young kids like to eat junk food, and while on the go, and short of time, this would be an ideal gift. But what else could we impress these kids with?

~Ipod, or any MP3 player. Whether your student is driving to and fro, bussing it, riding the rails, or even cycling between classes, this little tune carrier is very handy. It is not only able to hold their favorite rock artists, but it will also hold any kind of books on CD, or anything that is oral. This is perfect, especially if your student is learning another language, or is taking medical terminology classes, because they can listen to books while en route. Not only that, but they are very popular, and the battery life is strong (my Ipod can live for about two-three days before absolutely going lifeless), and they are quick to recharge. They are able to plug into any car stereo, and also can be accessories with a battery charger that plugs into a car lighter.

~Laptop. Yes, they are pricey, but if the commute is a long one, it may come in very handy, not just entertainment wise, but it may also enhance their grades. If they can put a large dent in their homework, or that big report that is due tomorrow, and save time for extracurricular activities, they will be much happier. Also, some textbooks now come with CD-Roms, which a laptop can be very helpful with.

~Car Maintenance. Just because they own a car doesn't mean they are taking good care of it. Take the car during holiday break and have it checked out. New tires, or brakes, an oil change, or a tune-up is not something that young people budget for. Yet, when something goes wrong with the machine, parents are the first ones they will turn to. Young adults don't want to spend what little money they have on maintenance, they would rather be frivolous with it. Taking the car in for minor adjustments is a helpful, and thoughtful thing to do.

~Cell phone. I don't want to suggest that you run out and pick up that three hundred dollar Blackberry or I-phone, but a simple cell will suffice. Not only can they entertain themselves during the ride,
