Christmas 2007: Great cookware items for college students

Cooking and college are not two words that seem to go naturally together. Your typical college student would probably rather eat pizza forever than have to actually cook a meal. But then, not all college students are created equal.
For the reluctant cook, the basics are enough. Something to boil water in for macaroni and cheese, a skillet big enough to fry an egg or flip a grilled cheese and the utensils needed to accomplish this. For this student, any cookware may be an uninspired gift. However, tools to use with the microwave may be a welcome addition. One such product is the Micro-Cooker by Pampered Chef. This small microwave saucepan comes with a ventilated lid that locks in place, and has a dozen uses. It easily steams vegetables, boils water, and can be used to heat most anything with minimal mess.

Some students may be more adventurous yet still have limited skills. Specialty cookware such as an omelet pan may be a good choice. A high quality chef's knife is always a must have for chopping and slicing. Space is also a consideration. If an item is useful and used a lot by the cook, then they will find a place to keep it. Otherwise it ends up in a closet and never seen again.
A more experienced cook is easier to buy for because they will appreciate a more quality item such as a LeCresuet Dutch oven or grill pan. A non-stick wok is an excellent choice for someone who has developed skills enough to tackle the many versatile uses this cookware can offer.
One item that students of all cooking abilities can utilize is a quesadilla maker. It may sound frivolous, however, this is a quick and easy piece of equipment to use. And, ingredients for healthy snacks are readily available and inexpensive.
If health or weight loss is a concern of the student on your list, consider a small steamer. Healthy meals can be made with limited effortand can be used for a variety of ingredients.
Think about the personality of the person you are buying for, and you should be able to come up with a cookware gift that is suitable to that students way of life.
