What exactly is meant by the "true origin of Christmas"? For Christians, Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. It is also a time to think about his life and the message he tried to deliver. To truly give a gift that remains true to these things, one must know what happened at the birth and what tenants Jesus thought were of such import that he would give his life for them. Since Jesus gave so many sermons and parables, only a few will be covered here. An extensive list can be found on "lifeofChrist.com/teachings".
The first event that should be addressed is the birth of Jesus. Many things happened when he was born and this is where we gained several of our current traditions. Matthew 1:18-25 and Luke 2:15-20 tell of the birth of Christ. Luke 2:1-14 tells us that angels appeared to shepherds in the field and proclaimed that Jesus had been born and sang praises to him. This could suggest two things which would stay true to the original meaning of Christmas. First, go to church, worship God and thank him for sending his son. Second, join a caroling group. Most people love to hear others singing carols and it is a non-threatening way to spread the story and tenants of Jesus while praising him at the same time.
Matthew 2:1-12 tells of gifts being brought to Jesus in celebration of Him. This gives a precedence for giving to others during the holiday season; it is not about how much one can receive. For many, the fact that someone has thought of them and wants to show them appreciation means more than the actual gift. This season, try to think of more than your immediate family, but also family you have lost contact with or don't often see. These people usually don't expect an expensive gift, and a simple card or phone call is received with excitement. Family needn't be defined by blood alone, close friends and members of your church family would most likely enjoy hearing from you as well.
Family aren't the only ones to think of this Christmas. Deuteronomy 15:7 says, "If there is a poor man among you,you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand" The Bible is riddled with scripture on the importance of giving to the poor and neglected; it was one of the major themes in Jesus' life. There are many ways to do this. Grocery stores allow you to buy food for those in need, bookstores set aside books for customers to purchase for children in the community, food banks are present in every county which provide groceries for families unable to give theirs
