There are dozens, maybe hundreds, of myths and misconceptions about pregnancy and fertility. So let's try to dispel them with some facts.
1. It is possible for a woman to get pregnant even if the man pulls out well before he ejaculates.
2. It is possible for a woman to get pregnant even if neither person orgasms.
3. There are times when women are more or less fertile, but women can get pregnant any time of the month. That means protection needs to be used every single time, whether it's before, during, or after her period.
4. Sperm does not die as soon as it hits the air. That means if you're not on hormonal birth control, you should be careful where semen goes. Women can get pregnant if semen drips from the anus, stomach, thigh, or anywhere else into the vagina. They can get pregnant if fingers or anything else have wet semen on them and are put into the vagina.
5. Women can get pregnant their first time having sex.
6. A period is not a sure sign that a girl isn't pregnant, and a missed or late period isn't a sure sign that she is. That goes for other symptoms too. If you want to know if you are pregnant, take a pregnancy test. Never try to rely on symptoms. The symptoms for early pregnancy are the same as symptoms for dozens of other things.
7. Pregnancy can occur even if birth control is used. No method of birth control is 100% effective. If you want added protection, try pairing a hormonal method (such as the pill or patch) with a non-hormonal method (such as condoms or spermicide).
If you have more questions about pregnancy and fertility or if you want more information about birth control, talk to your doctor or ob-gyn.
