"In the spirit of the season, we went out and killed a tree." - Dr Johnny Fever
In a world so desperate for trees, what are we doing cutting down trees for an outdated tradition such as the Christmas tree? We are loosing hundred of acres of trees every day due to wildfires, over harvesting and development and here we are cutting even MORE down for no good reason? People are really stupid.
People are also stupid enough to believe that by growing acres of trees raised for the sole purpose of using them as Christmas trees is the best use of our dwindling farmland. Although the cut trees are replaced by tree farmers, in a world where there is not enough food and not enough land for wildlife, a Christmas tree farm is not the best use of our resources.
We Need All The Trees We Can Get
Trees hold onto water through their root systems, which helps prevent floods, erosion and the destruction they cause. They provide shade and homes for endangered and not-so-endangered animals, birds and insects. But most importantly, they make oxygen. It's only the big old trees that take years or even decades to grow that help out wildlife and our soil.
Plants are the only thing that can reliably and economically make oxygen. Without oxygen, you won't live very long. By cutting down live trees for ridiculous purposes like a silly out-moded holiday, we are merely choking ourselves slowly to death. We also are loosing our fertile topsoil because there aren't enough tree roots to keep it from being washed away in floods or rain. So, we're going to wind up starving ourselves, too which might be a moot point since we won't be able to breathe.
Party On
Once upon a time, there were so many trees, we thought they could never end. We used them for anything at all, because there was a limitless supply of them. Now, we are paying the price for such stupidity. But the price won't be paid in full until our grand children's time. They will suffer from lack of trees, which are worth far more than gold for their ability to keep us alive.
Cutting down live trees for Christmas or any other holiday should be illegal and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Trees are far more important to just use as holiday decorations. You don't have to stop celebrating Christmas (if you celebrate it at all), just don't use any live tree, or any kind of tree at all. Christmas is supposed to be about getting together with family and friends not about following holiday fashions.
