What should be mandatory, is a law against using a cell phone while the car is in motion. A person gets pulled over for speeding and the cop has to wait for them to end their call. If that person had been drinking, they would immediately be taking the DUI tests. (Driving under the influence)
You do not see a law for CUD. (Cell use distraction) I believe their are enough distractions in a car and on the road. People have died changing the channel or inserting a CD on their car radio. They have been in accidents for lighting a cigarette or putting on mascara.
Make it mandatory to stop the vehicle before answering the phone or making a call. You never know if you are going to be caught up in a serious conversation with someone. These conversations require much attention and thought. You cannot do this while driving. Sure, I am able to multi-task. We need to draw the line somewhere.
Hands-free or not, a phone is a distraction and dangerous for all on the road. There are all the new seat belt safety laws and new car seats for children out there. Think how careful you are placing your baby into a car and fastening their five point harness over their chest. Would you put your baby as well as complete strangers at risk over a phone call you could wait a few minutes for?
Seriously consider the factors. I believe we should have our freedom to do as we wish in privacy. However, we need to remind ourselves that freedom can be taken away any moment over a phone call.
