Why do we swear on the bible? The answer is that it is supposed to mean something, like swearing on the life of your beloved mother. However, what needs to be looked at is that does the bible mean the same thing to everyone?
The answer to that is no. This is a diverse society with very diverse religious beliefs. To have someone who is not Christian swear on the bible truly means nothing. They could say what they want with a clear conscience because they by principle do not follow the words that are written in that text.
This then leads us to two options, take a poll of the person's religious beliefs and have them swear on something that actually means something to them or just do away with the swearing on the bible all together. The later choice is most likely the better of the two.
We have a separation of church and state, therefore religion should be taken out of government all together. Yes people should be sworn in but let them swear that they will tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth because they know that they will go to jail on perjury charges. Let them make amends with their conscience and religious beliefs, not someone else's. A court of law needs to be unbiased and impartial in all of it's aspects. This should include religion, having the bible in the court room is just one step closer to having an established religion in the United States. It is a constitutional right that we as a people can worship in which ever religion we want without feeling pressured, discriminated or afraid for having a different belief system. The bible in a court room is a step backward for our society, not a step forward.
