If you want to do this well, this may be more difficult than you may think. Consider what is normally done when you want to get a car evaluated by a professional. Start with a car evaluation questionnaire and assess the major areas on the vehicle. You will not be an expert but it will give you a good start.
· Make of the car and the model.
· Condition of the exterior. Are there any scratch marks or dents? Were there any added features e.g. flood lamps or spoilers.
· Condition of the interior. Check for stains, tears in the upholstery, carpeting, the addition of leather seats etc.
· Steering. This should be even and smooth
· Speedometer reading.
· Accessories. Do not include manufacturer-installed accessories. However, record if any of those are damaged.
· Tires -worn or fairly new.
· Condition of the engine. You should know the general sate of the engine from your own experience driving the vehicle and from comments from your mechanic.
At the end of this exercise, you now have a good idea of the condition of your vehicle. You should be able to categorize it into poor, average or excellent condition. Now you can check to see what the price range is for your make and model. Also research the prices for the various none-manufacturer accessories that have been added to the vehicle. You can get this information from local dealers and the Internet.
Based on your general impression of the vehicle, adjust the typical asking rate up or down accordingly.
