How do I know if I'm born for greatness?

We are all born destined for greatness. It is not a question of knowing. We all start out the same. It is the experiences and challenges that define us, that mold us into what we will ultimately become. If you truly want to be great, then you will be. You are the only one that can define your path and overcome obstacles to realize your greatness.

My interest has always been to write. As far back as I can remember, writing has been my strong point and my desire. My fourth grade elementary teacher, however, had a different opinion. I was in the lowest reading and writing group. In her mind, I was writing challenged. I fought her control and I wrote all the time. I read all the time too. I did not allowed this teacher to deter me from what I wanted to do. When I think back on this situation, I defined myself as a good writer and capable reader even though I was only a child. My fourth grade teacher was merely a hurtle to jump over to achieve the greatness I knew was within me.

When I was in college, I had an opportunity to work for a small editing company. Even though it was just a temporary job, a three month assignment, I really wanted that chance to gain some experience. At the time, I had a permanent job at a cleaners as a cashier. I really wanted and needed the editing job. My parents, on the other hand, thought it best to be at the cleaners. They were very insistent I keep that job. Bending to their pressure, I kept the cashier job and missed out on the editing opportunity. During my next semester at school, however, I took a creative writing class, against my parents' advice, and gained a host of writing and editing experiences. Again, I fulfilled my destiny of becoming something I wanted to be, effecting my own greatness.

I strongly believe we achieve greatness by, not only being born, but being able to do the things that makes us happy. Greatness comes on many different scales. It is just like beauty, held in the eye of the beholder. Some of us are fortunate enough to have encouragement from outside sources, like family, friends, spouses, teachers, and even strangers. And then some of us, such as myself, must start off by looking deep within to find that light, that little glimmer of confidence.

The meaning of greatness is different for us all. Greatness to one person could be to achieve wealth. Greatness to someone else could be popularity. Greatness for my six year daughter, for example, was to dance across the stage at her ballet recital and she was beautiful and great.

Being great is a state of mind. It is something defined by you, for you. Greatness, to me, is not something that I have to question for myself. I am born. I am alive. Greatness is within me as it is within all of us.
