Will software programmers become jobless in the future?

Computer technology is advancing at a tremendous rate, so it should be no surprise that the demand for software programmers is changing.

When I first started out in the computer software field, more than twenty years ago, there was no internet, no personal computers, and there were many different flavors of operating systems. Standards? Ha! Voice regognition software? Are you dreaming?

Today we can all be annoyed when it takes five minutes to figure out how to get to a real person when calling our local utility. Back when, every call was answered by an operator.

Computers are doing more and more, and somebody is designing, coding, and testing all that software. If you want it to be you, you need to keep on top of the field, and get a feel for what kinds of programmers are in demand, and what skills you will need. Talk to employers, read the help wanted section of the paper, read industry publications to keep on top of trends. Consider taking a class or two or studying on your own to brush up on your knowledge or get a foothold in a new area.

Software programmers will continue to be needed for a long time to come. Just make sure that one of them will be you.
