Memoirs: Childhood memories
During the stages of childhood, there are many different feelings, experiences, and circumstances that make it a different memory for everyone. Most of my memories of my childhood are positive memories. It is a natural thing in life that there are ups and downs, but we in one way or another cope.
When thinking of my childhood, I think of family gatherings, people helping people, relaxation along with work. My father was a sweet potato farmer, who was raised during depression. Our family was raised conservatively, however; it was not just about work, but fun also.
I guess my first memories were about the age of four years old. I was the baby of the family. My sister was seventeen years older than me and my brother was ten years older, so now you can see why I say I was the baby of the family. I can remember my sister getting married and moving away, which was a sad time for the family. I can remember my dad saying she is moving away, but it give us a place to visit and it will be a vacation for us also. Putting the situation in this perspective, gave us something to look forward to. Her husband was military, and they were constantly moving around. My dad stuck to his word and we visited my sister and her husband at least once a year.
Remembering back, the travel time for most of the trips were no less than ten hours. Well, you know what that meant. It meant myself asking many, many times, how long will it take before we get there? I sounded like a broken record, so what my parents started doing was leaving for our trips before day break, so I would go back to sleep. My mother would get up and fix a picnic lunch and we would stop at a rest stop to eat, rather than eating in a restaurant. Some of the advantages were to stretch our legs, bathroom stops, and get some of my energy burned up.
Speaking of rest stops, in those days you didn't have to worry about safety as much as you do now. Not only on trips but also in your own community, which brings me to other memories. Back then we would go trick or treating and did not need any adults with us. The candy was usually homemade and parents didn't have to worry about checking the candy. The day after Halloween, we always had the day off from school. I lived in a Catholic community and it was All Saints Day. Friends would get together and share candy. I especially liked the popcorn balls.
The community was what a community is suppose to be like. The people would visit each other at night after
