No matter what is said, no matter what is done, there is nothing that can be done when trees are cut down for Christmas. What is the difference when we cut down a tree at Christmas then at any other time in the year when millions of trees are cut down for developing new housing communities and new shopping malls? To me the difference is that at Christmas time, when it should be the only time that trees are cut down for use in Christian homes and churches, is the idea of the time. It is a time for fathers, sons, daughters, mothers to go on a road trip visiting Christmas tree farms or wooded areas that are marked off for the use of Christmas tree picking only.
Do not get me wrong, I do not agree with the continuous cutting down of trees. We need trees, the animals that live in the wood need trees and our survival depends on trees. But Christmas time is different. For many, many years families have gone out to find the right tree for their home. Church groups have taken trips to the woods to commune with one another and then celebrate by picking the best tree for their churches.
I think about Charlie Brown's Christmas story. The small tree, no matter how ugly, no matter how lanky it was, it still meant a great deal to the Peanuts Gang. It was all about the meaning of Christmas when God delivered His Only Begotten Son to Earth so that He can teach His Father's Word to the world and then be delivered to the Cross to die for us, for our sins and our transgressions and to eventually rise again to let us know that those who come to Know Him will Know the Father in Heaven and will have eternal life.
