Homemade Christmas tree ornaments add a personalized touch to any Christmas tree. Every year my children make homemade ornaments in class at school and every year those are the first ones I place on the tree. They are the favorite of mine and my husband as well as my children's grandparents. So as your children are likely to make homemade ornaments each year in school, why not add to the fun of the season by creating some of your family's own homemade ornaments as well?
Here are a few easy to make and affordable ornaments that the whole family can join in making...
* Cloth Candy Canes *
Cotton fabrics in a variety of colors cut into squares of your size choice.
Wax paper
Craft glue, available in craft stores
Paintbrushes
Pipe cleaners
Lay wax paper down for a place to work on. If your use regular newspaper the ink may get onto the candy cane fabrics, so wax paper is the best choice.
One at a time lay a piece of fabric down, with the print size up if there is a print.
With the paintbrush paint an even amount of glue along the the fabric.
Insert a pipe cleaner along the long side of the fabric.
Roll the fabric along the pipe cleaner as tight as possible.
Smooth out the outer edges of the candy cane.
Repeat this two more times so you have three altogether.
Pinch together the top of the three wrapped pipe cleaners together.
As tight as you can twist the three candy canes together in a spiral direction.
Bend the top into a candy cane design.
Next place the candy cane in an upward position in a cup to allow it to dry completely.
Then they can be hung on a Christmas tree as ornaments and saved over the years.
* Pine Cone Ornaments *
Pine Cones (of course)
Glitter spray paint or plain glitter and glue
Metallic green and red paints
Paintbrush
Ribbon or thread (to hang it up)
Lay newspaper out on the desired working space.
Spray paint the cones
While still wet if your child desired plain glitter rather then spray glitter, then have them roll the pine cone around in the glitter. You can place the glitter in a shallow bowl that has enough room to allow your child to roll the pine cone in. Or they can use their hands and sprinkle the glitter over it.
Spray paint the pine cone again until desired color is reached.
Place the pine cone up on its base to completely dry.
Next cut a piece of the thread or ribbon about 4 or 5 inches long.
Glue one side of each ribbon or thread to the top part of the pine
